HI, I’m REBECCA
After working for many years as a writer and an editor, I retired to become a private music teacher, and I thought that joyful work would be my final vocation. Then came the pandemic, bringing losses and new challenges. And a door unexpectedly opened. For me, the practice of psychotherapy has been a practice of holding grief and joy simultaneously. I bring a lifetime of experience to this work and have come to see my previous vocations as one long preparation for this one.
MY APproach
Empathy and Respect
I want it to be safe for you to share your tenderest concerns. So I start from the premise that all parts of you, even parts you don’t feel thrilled about, have come into being for good reason. That doesn’t mean therapy will be a stroll in the park. At times, it may feel like you’re trekking through tangled forest. But it helps to have an ally who witnesses your experience and can occasionally point a flashlight at something ahead or behind.
The course of therapy is unique to every individual. That said, this page offers a general sense of what you can expect when you work with me.
Attunement
Many people, when they first come to therapy, have never had the experience of being listened to in a truly open and curious way. Attuned listening, as I practice it, means listening without agenda. It means I commit to being fully present so I can tune in to the heart of what you’re saying.
Slowing Down the Moment
I might pause you to ask: what’s happening inside as you speak? Where in your body are you feeling the energy? Or I might invite exploration of what’s happening between you and me in the moment.
DREAMWORK
My approach to dreamwork is experiential rather than interpretive. Dream characters and dream images tend to represent parts of the dreamer. Listening to them can supercharge the process of self-discovery.
NO-Unsolicited-Advice Policy
Have you ever had this experience?—you risk telling someone about something deeply painful? And they leap in with advice? Maybe it’s even good advice, but the conversation leaves you feeling deflated. That’s a good sign that advice isn’t what you need. I believe I serve you best by supporting you in finding your own way. While I may sometimes share my perspective, I’m not here to tell you what to do or what to think.
Collaboration
Within a framework of empathy and respect for your experiences, we’ll explore. What memories, fears, or yearnings might a given situation be triggering? What feels really, really hard? What’s at stake for you that you might not have been aware of? What possibilities might these dynamics be obscuring?
